LORD HALIFAX’S STORY
Viscount Halifax, who seldom jests in public speeches, once delighted the House with a story in regard to Nazi assertions that all the trouble has been due to Britain’s interference with their aggressions. An undergraduate, he said, was taken before the college head for drunkenness on three successive nights. He explained that on the first night he drank only soda and whisky, on the second soda and brandy, and on the third soda and gin. As soda was the only constant factor, he concluded that that must be the cause of the mischief, and he solemnly promised never to touch soda again!
