CONCERT AND COMMUNITY SING
A MOTUEKA EFFORT FOR PATRIOTIC FUNDS PROCEEDS AMOUNT TO £33 At Motueka a large and very enthusiastic audience enjoyed the excellent programme presented on Tuesday evening, when the most successful so far of the series of community sings and concerts being held in aid of Patriotic Funds was staged, proceeds from this effort amounting to £33. Between items Messrs Theo. Simpson and Gordon Burk led the community singing, and kept the audience well entertained, while Mr Jacob Brown presided at the piano, and later in the evening supplied the music for the dancing. At an interval vegetables, preserves, etc., donated by residents, were auctioned by Mr Theo Simpson, who had a strenuous task to perform, as several lots of goods were returned again and again, to be re-sold, in some cases, six times. Groceries to the .value of £l, won at the previous community sing by Mr Bert Hickmott, were given back to the committee and included in the auction sale. A dinner, donated by Mr and Mrs A. D. Taylor, realised over £7. Mr N. J. Lewis, who was the winner in the first place, returned it for auction, and, after being himself the highest bidder, again donated it for sale. The bottle of wine went to Mr F. Bradley. Miss Marcelle Snow’s appeal in song —“A Penny, Sir” —brought in pennies to the amount of £2 10s 3d. PROGRAMME The programme was as follows: —Vocal solo, “Bubbles,” Marcelle Snow: Russian dance, Gloria Stevens; duet with guitar accompaniment, WardHolmes Sisters; toe dance, Lois Skilton; saxophone duet, Messrs Gray and Carruthers; vocal solo, “A Penny, Sir,” Marcelle Snow; tap duo, Miss N. Mani-
fold and Mr G. Burn; canoe song. Maori party; comedy chorus, Mr Ben Morgan; medley poi dance, demonstrating the single, double and long pois; comedy chorus, Mr Ben Morgan. Members of the Maori party were Misses R. and C. Bailey, U. Stephens, Hine Tini, Julie Witika and Hera Walker, and Messrs T. Bailey, R. Ropata, M. Davis, D Wilson, and P. McLaren. The organising committee desire to express their sincere thanks to Messrs
■ C James, D. Kelly, A. Canton, C. Congdon and Mesdames A. Talbot, E. Askew and G. E. Smith for donation of goods and produce. The dance, with which the evening concluded, proved very enjoyable, Mr Theo Simpson acting as M.C.
