RICHMOND

BOROUGH COUNCIL FORTNIGHTLY MEETING The fortnightly meeting of the Richmond Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening when there were present: The Mayor (Mr A. R. Tuffnell), Councillors McGlashen, Lukey, Stratford, Norris and Poole. Councillor Palmer was excused from attendance. Prior to commencing the business the Mayor referred to the death of Mr Thomas Goodman who had formerly been a member of the Council. He moved that a letter of sympathy be forward to the relatives. The motion was carried in the usual way. Accounts totalling £IBB 19s 9d were passed for payment. FOREMAN’S REPORT The foreman’s report was read and adopted as follows: “The following streets have been graded: William street, Lower Queen street, McShane’s Road, Beach road, ! and Griffin's Road have been pared. Salisbury Road footpath has been weeded and gravelled with six yards ■ of footpath gravel from the yard. The i following side-ditches have been clear■ed out: Gladstone Road, Beach Road, | Upper Queen street and Hill street, j The truck has been engaged in carting j stones and filling for the retaining-wall in Beach Road ditch which is now nearing completion as follows: Stones, 88 ! yards; filling, 24 yards. Also 8 yards jof stones have been carted for Hill j street ditch, and 43 yards screened I gravel to Oxford street. The reservoir is to-day overflowing.” CORRESPONDENCE Councillor Palmer wrote expressing appreciation of the Council’s letter of sympathy. The Waimea County Council notified that the Engineer had been authorised to deal with the ditch in Lower Queen street. Mr R. H. Hammond asked that work be carried out at the lower end of Headingly Lane. The Mayor said that the Works Committee had inspected the lane and it was in a bad condition. It was resolved that the work be put in hand. The Under-Secretary, Department of Internal Affairs wrote that the organisation set up by the borough under the Emergency Precautions Scheme appeared to be adequate and expressed appreciation of the Council’s co-oper-ation in the matter. The District Medical Officer of Health asked the Council to rc-appoint Mr ■ Harry Coltman as Sanitary Inspector, as Mr John Beattie had been granted I leave of absence for service overseas. On the Mayor’s motion Mr Coltman j was re-appointed. ! The Mayor stated that owing to j petrol restrictions the Sanitary Inspector would endeavour to carry* out his i work as economically as possible and there might be some delay in making individual inspections. The Nelson Hospital Board forwarded formal notification of the Hospital Estimates, 1940-41 as approved by the Minister of Health.

The Surveyor-General wrote stating that the total cost of the town planning scheme would be about £125. On the Mayor’s motion, seconded by Councillor Stratford, it was resolved that owing to the present condition of affairs the Council does not feel justified in incurring this expenditure. The Valuer-General asked that steps j be taken to appoint an assessor to the j Assessment Court. Nominations for the position close at noon on 2nd July. 1 The Mayor stated that work being done on Beach Road with Scheme 13 men would be completed by the end of the month. It was resolved that on completion of this work the services of the Scheme 13 men be dispensed with. After considerable discussion it was resolved that a ratepayer in Salisbury Road be asked to repair the damage to footpath by cows and to take steps to prevent any recurrence of same. The Works Committee was authorised to inspect proposed work in Wensley Road and on Wensley Hill. It was resolved that a protective rail be placed along the edge of the work now completed in Beach Road. CENTRAL EMERGENCY COMMITTEE Sitting as a Central Emergency Committee last evening the Richmond Borough Council discussed at length various matters in connection with any emergency that might arise. 4 It was finally decided that a meeting of the central committee, together with the convenors of the sub-committees, be held on Monday, Ist July at 7.30 p.m. in the Council Chambers.
