WAIMEA WEST
LITERARY AND DEBATING SOCIETY At the last meeting of the Waimea West Literary and Debating Society the subject debated was “That for farming purposes, large holdings are preferable to small.” The speakers for the affirmative were Messrs R. O’Connor, R. O’Connor jnr., A. O'Connor and K. Robinson.' The affirmative stressed the facts that on large farms the overhead cost for implements was less * and that valuable land was not being used for hedges and fences. The speakers for the negative, Messrs E. Lowe, G. Hanson, S. Wilkinson and G. McMurtry argued that with small farms a greater yield per acre could be obtained, more people were employed and that depression periods did not have such bad effects. Mr A. G. Sinclair judged and awarded the decision to the affirmative. At the meeting to be held next Thursday a Parliamentary Bill will be debated.
