COMMENT IN BRITAIN
RESOLUTION TO FIGHT ON < I [U.P.A. —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright] t LONDON, 24th June. S Canada’s first wartime Budget is > regarded in England as an indication T of Canada’s determination to put all j 1 i its strength into the war. It is the • ! largest Budget in the Dominion’s his i ; tory. The expenditure proposed is j about three times as great as Canada’s expenditure in recent normal years, and this increase is due wholly to the war , effort. 1 There will be new duties on gramo- < phone, radio sets, and other articles. < It appears in London that the new ’ ' tax on motor-cars, rising to 80 per 1 1 cent, of the selling price, is so heavy i that it will almost prohibit the pur- ] chase of cars and leave the indus- j tries free to turn to production for ’ war purposes. The Budget shows Canadian resolu- 1 ’ tion to fight on with the utmost vigour ( 1 and to make all possible sacrifices to , ’ that end. Mi' Ralston made it clear that he was calling on all Canadians ’ for a maximum effort. It was the Gov- ; ernmerd’s policy to bring about as [ rapidly as possible the full employment of all Canadians and chc full use , of their industrial strength and resources.
