Cooke. ij GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE TO FURTHER WAR EFFORT \ The Provincial Secretary of the Far-! \ mers’ Union forwarded a circular letter j l in respect to the assistance to be given j | by the Government to further the j \ Dominion War Effort, in which it was j | stated that men would be taken oil' | Public Works just as fast as they were | applied for. It was pointed out that j I the speed of the Dominion’s effort to | increase production was controlled by ■ farmers’ elforts to prepare land for j production. The rates of pay and subsidy to be i allowed by the Government in con-; nection with men employed on dairy ! and sheep farms were detailed in the | letter. In discussing the employment of lab- j 1 our in general, cases were instanced by j two members where certain young i men in the district, who were on sus- i tenance, had turned down offers of ! temporary employment. PROVINCIAL CONFERENCE DELEGATE’S REPORT Messrs D. L. Drummond and O. C. Wilkinson, who attended the Provincial Conference as delegates from the Riwaka branch submitted brief reports on the business transacted. Mr Drummond said the number of absentees on this occasion had been very noticeable on account no doubt of petrol restrictions. Mr J. Corder had delivered an interesting address on farming (natters stretching over a period of 35 years. There had been, he added, little debate by delegates at the recent conference due he thought to the war clouds that hung over the Empire. Mr Drummond also outlined the main remits dealt with during the first day of conference. These remarks were supplemented by Mr Wilkinson; and Mr K. J. Holyoake spoke of the business transacted on the second day. RIWAKA AREA FIRE FIGHTING SERVICE • In regard to the question of a fire lighting service for the Riwaka area Mr Wratt reported that from a conversation he had had with the chairman of the Waimea County Council he had : gained the impression that the County i Council required-some further lead in : the matter. Following a discussion it was decided, « on the motion of Messrs Holyoake and : Drummond, that the Waimea County Council be advised that immediately they had made arrangements with the ! Motueka Borough Council for the use ■ of their fire fighting plant, the Riwaka Farmers’ Union would investigate the matter of providing an adequate water /; j supply within the area. TRANSPORT MATTERS , Mr Wilkinson informed the meeting • j that the Farmers’ Transport District : Committee would meet at an early date ' to discuss important business, and suggested that a delegate be appointed to attend. It was resolved (Messrs Holyoake ; and Drummond) that Mr Wratt represent the Riwaka Farmers’ Union at the ; meeting of the Transport Committee. j PROVINCIAL EXECUTIVE Mr E. S. Wratt was re-elected the ( Riwaka branch representative on the , Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ . Union. INCREASED PRODUCTION In referring to the Dominion’s call for 1 increased production Mr Wilkinson stated that as chairman of the Provincial Executive of the New Zealand Pig ! ! Marketing Association he had been | addressing meetings throughout the dis- , trict. At these meetings, which had | been well attended, he had shown ways I and means of increasing the pig inI dustry to a greater measure than be- | fore. ! Mr Drummond considered that it was j essential to the farming community to know from the Government just what I commodities were required for in- | creased production. Mr Holyoake said he understood that cheese and wool j were two of the greatest essentials the Dominion must produce for Britain’s !
