EVEN CATS OF WAR
The use of cats in war-time dates Dark to the reign of Cambyses 11, King of Persia. It was he who, during the ”iege of a city, had tom-cats hurled <>\er the walls. They had first been made savage by ill-treatment. Attacked by the strange adversaries, the inhabitants preferred to open the gates In the sixteenth century cats went into battle with small cannon strapped on heir backs. The cannon were filled with unpleasant vapours, which were t eleased by a detonator. Since then, fortunately, there has not been much use for cats in warfare—except during ‘he siege of Paris in 1870, when jugged •ats became a necessary alternative to >ugged hare and helped to save the city from famine.
