METAL COLLECTION
NATIONAL CAMPAIGN [United Press Association] WELLINGTON, 4th April. With the double purpose of assisting industry and augmenting the National Patriotic Fund a proposal by the National Patriotic Fund Board to launch a national campaign for the collection of non-ferrous metals has been given the approval of the Prime Minister, the Hon. P. Fraser. To ensure the success of the campaign it is essential to have the co-operation of children in primary and secondary schools. To this end the board is circularising education : boards and governing bodies of schools. Lead, brass and copper are in some- , what short supply in industry to-day, | the circular states, and the collection, it is believed, will be of assistance in ' the Dominion's industrial field of ac- ’ tivity. The suggestion is to collect one metal at a time for a period of a fort--1 night, beginning, for example, with lead : for a fortnight to be followed by fort- • nights for brass and copper. Each metal is to be kept separate, with a view to t eliminating costs of classification by : merchants to whom the metals will i ultimately be sent The proposal is that metals shall be i held by schools for later collection, to ; be arranged by the National Patriotic j Fund Board. There is no suggestion t that competition between classes or l schools should be encouraged, and it is r also fe lt that children should first obtain the consent of parents or friends , to contribute pieces of scrap metal
