NEW ZEALAND RECORD EQUALLED

AUSTRALIAN HURDLERS’ GOOD RUN [United Press Association) HASTINGS, 11th January. The visiting Australian hurdles champion, S. Stenner. equalled the New Zealand record for 120yds. hurdles established by P. F. Sharpley (Hastings) in a match race with the Canterbury champion. C. R Bradwell, in Rotorua three years ago, when he beat Sharpley and Bradwell in Napier tonight. Stenner made a poor start, knocking down the first hurdle, but he made a magnificent recovery and showed brilliant style over the remaining obstacles, Sharpley and Stenner came into the clear together but the Australian outpaced Sharpley to win by 18in in 15sec. Bradwell finished several yards behind Sharpley. Sharpley bid fair to lower his own New Zealand record in the 220 yards hurdles, but slowed up towards the finish to complete the course in 25sec, one-fifth slower than the record, established in Dannevirke last year. Stenner showed good style, but never looked like beating Sharpley. Bradwell showed good improvement but tired visibly when three-quarters of the course had been covered. Eight yards separated Sharpley and Stenner, Bradwell being a further three yards back.
