SWIMMING

SUCCESSFUL CARNIVAL LAST NIGHT INTERMEDIATE AND JUNIOR REPRESENTATIVES TEAM FOR NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS The final public performances of the Nelson swimming team to take part in the New Zealand Intermediate and Junior Championships at Dunedin were witnessed at the Municipal Baths last evening at a most successful carnival. The weather was perfect and there was a large attendance of the public. The swimming and diving were of a very high standard and the many thrilling finishes were a tribute to the handicapper. The water in the baths could not be regarded as fast and the times recorded by some of the intermediates and juniors were good enough to raise hopes that the team will bring back several New Zealand titles to Nelson. The 100 yards ladies’ freestyle was won by an intermediate, Miss P. Walker, in 68 l-ssecs, which is only three seconds outside of the New Zealand intermediate record. Two fine performances were given by L. Barry, a junior representative, who won the 100 yards boys’ race in 68 l-ssecs, after giving several competitors a length of the baths start, and who also won the 200 yards freestyle event in 2mins 51secs. In Miss J. Carpenter Nelson will hold a big chance in winning the New Zealand intermediate diving title. This girl has improved greatly and her performances last evening showed her to be at the top of her form. An outstanding diving exhibition was given during the evening by Miss Carpenter, D. Kerr (who was second in the New ! Zealand senior diving championship last year) and F. Greenem (who formerly represented Nelson at the championships and who is now a member of the Hutt Club, Wellington. Another feature of the evening was the interhouse men’s relay in which there were eight house teams competing.
