FISHING IN ROTORUA DISTRICT

SPORT PATCHY DURING HOLIDAYS [United Press Association] ROTORUA, 10th January. • Fishing in the Rotorua district dur- ; ing the holiday period has been patchy ; because of bad weather, states the < conservator of fish and game, Mr A. Kean ,in his fortnightly report. The fish are congregating at the mouths of ; the streams, particularly in the vicinity of Hamurana. Trout have been taken after sunset by anglers using ; large dark flies, such as Craig’s night fly, and the ewe wasp and dark hawk ■ flies. Trolling on Rotorua has produced some fair bags. Rotoiti has been hard fishing, but all fish caught have been in excellent condition. Rotoehu and Rotoma also have been difficult areas, but persistent anglers have managed to get fair catches. Okareka and the Green Lakes have been hard and Tarawera Lake particularly so. Lake Rerewhakaitu has produced a fair number of fish in good condition. Lake Okataina has again been one of the bright spots in the district. Fly fishermen and trollers continue to get good catches of trout up to 101 b in weight. The Waikato River has fished fairly well, particularly in the late \ evening with a large dry sedge. Sport at the beginning of the fort- ! night was good in the Tokaanu district, but after the first few days it became , very hard, except at the Delta. Hatepe, j Jellicoe Point, Tauranga-Taupo, and ' Motupa are at present poor. Trolling [ in the Tokaanu bays and environs is : fairly good. Fishing at the Taupo end \ of the lake has been only fair. The weather has been overcast but 1 fine, not the best of conditions for ' fishermen A fair number of anglers 1 are in the district, but not so many as ’ last season. All fish taken have been ] in excellent condition, the most sue- \ cessful flies being the hawk fly, Taupo ! tiger and temati.
