NEW YEAR’S DAY AT LAKE ROTOITI

RECORD NUMBER OF VISITORS What was estimated as a record number of visitors travelled to Lake Rotoiti for New Year’s Day. The w’eather kept fine most of the day. In the afternoon, two speed boat races were held, one for the St. Arnaud Cup and the other for the Fleet Wings Cup. Four boats contested these races as follows: “Miss Murch.” Mr C. F. Mockett; “Silver Spray.” Mr H. Gaskell; “Eve,” Mr A. McCaa; “Sparks,” Mr K. Walker. In the race for the St. Arnaud Cup all boats finished in the same order as they started, vis.—Sparks 1, handicap, lmin; Miss Murch, 2, handicap, 45sec; Eve, 3, 40sec; Silver Spray, 4, scr. In the second race for the Fleet Wings Cup Miss Murch broke down in the first lap and had to "withdraw. The result was as follows: —Silver Spray, scr, 1; Eve, 30sec 2; Sparks, 15sec, 3. An exciting finish was witnessed in this rac° as Silver Spray contested Eve in the straight.

The children were entertained at sports and races for which there were prizes for all. Further sports at the Lake will be held on Easter Monday.
