MESSAGE IN BOTTLE
PICKED UP AT WAIKANAE BEACH [United Press Association} GISBORNE 9th January. When playing on the Waikanae beach a nine-year-old boy, whose parents are spending a holiday at the motor camp there, discovered a bottle bearing a message thrown from the liner Monterey, off Sydney, almost 11 months ago. The message contained in the bottle indicated that information of the final resting-place would be welcomed by the United States Hydrographic Office, Washington. The message was written on a form supplied by the United States Naval Department and was sealed in the bottle by Mr E. R. Johansen, officer of the American liner, on 19th February, 1939. in latitude 34deg. 23min. south and longitude 157 deg. 42min. east. The position indicated is about half a day’s steam from Sydney Heads.
