CLOSE FRIENDSHIP
CRYSTALLISATION OF PRESENT TENDENCIES DEFENCE OF THE CARPATHIAN FRONTIER [U.P.A.-By Electric Telegraph-Copyright] (Received 10th January, 11.10 a.m.) NEW YORK, 9th January. In a message from Belgrade, Mr Sulzberger, correspondent of the “New York Times,” states that quantities of Italian military planes have recently begun to arrive in Hungary, the Italian pilots remaining indicating that it is more than a simple commercial transaction. Well informed circles suspect their presence results from an Italian guarantee of Hungary’s frontiers. Confirmation of such a guarantee would not be a sensational development in European politics, but rather a crystallisation of the present tendencies in ItalianHungarian relations, which are traditionally close, also the friendship of Budapest and the Vatican. Hungary is determined to defend the Carpathian frontier. Germany at present does not appear to be intending to invade this part of the world, but Russia might. It is certain that Italy would help Hungary to defend herself.
