BACKSTROKE SWIMMING

NEW ZEALAND RECORD BROKEN [United Press Association] AUCKLAND, Bth January. At the Auckland swimming championship carnival to-night, the New Zealand record for the 100 yards backstroke, held by S. C. Cliff (Canterbury) was broken by 1 2-ssec. by P. E. Mathieson, who registered 64 sec. The men’s 220 yards free-style was won by P. Hanan in 2min. 22sec., and the women’s 100 yards free-style by Miss K. Grey, in 66 4-ssec.
