ESCAPED PRISONER
EXTRA MONTH’S GAOL IMPOSED [United Press Association) AUCKLAND, 4th January. A plea of guilty and an appeal for leniency were made by Raymond Patrick Letton, aged 33, plasterer, when charged in the Magistrates’ Court with being an incorrigible rogue, in that he escaped from a place of lawful confinement before the expiration of the term for which he was committed. Police said Letton was sentenced to 18 months’ gaol'last March, and on the night of 4th November escaped from his cell at Rangipo prison camp, Tokaanu, after cutting out the window. He was recaptured by a constable at Kingsland on 24th December. This was the second time Letton had escaped from custody. Letton told the magistrate, Mr McKean, that he tried to join the army and make a fresh start. “It is probably just as well you didn’t join the army,” said Mr McKean. “However I am taking into account what you told me. On this charge you will be sentenced to one month’s imprisonment, to be served at the expiry of the term you are now serving.”
