NELSON CHAMPIONSHIPS B. O’CONNOR WINS MEN’S TITLE LADIES’ FINAL TO MISS CROSS (WELLINGTON) Except for the combined champion-! ship doubles the Nelson Provincial j tennis championships were concluded yesterday afternoon on the Nelson Club’s Courts. The weather was hot with a southerly wind blowing down the courts. There was only a small sprinkling of spectators to watch the finals. Ben O’Connor and T. Martin, contested the final of the men’s championship and after a match which was rather more even than the score indicates, O’Connor won, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1. A Wellington player with a good style, Miss Cross, won the final of the ladies’ championships from Mrs Sara, of Talcaka. Results: — MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP SINGLES Semi-final T. Martin beat B. Lee, 6-3, 6-1. Final Ben O’Connor beat T. Martin, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1. LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIP SINGLES Final Miss Cross (Wellington) beat Mrs Sara, 7-5, 4-6, 7-5. MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP DOUBLES Semi-final Lee and Martin beat Hoare and Mayo 6-1, 6-2. Final Lee and Martin beat Hume and M. O’Connor, 6-3, 6-8, 6-4. COMBINED CHAMPIONSHIP DOUBLES Miss Fletcher and Martin beat Miss Macfarlane and Hoare, 6-1, 6-3; Miss P. Satherly and B. The Wellington Lawn Tennis Association’s annual championship tournament, which began on Saturday and was continued on Monday, was concluded at Miramar yesterday with the exception of the mixed doubles, which are yet to be completed. Entries this year showed a decline, but this had been expected, as most visiting players are presumably holding off for the New Zealand centennial championships in Wellington starting on 10th February. Results of the semifinals and finals are:— Men’s Singles Semi-finals.—N. V. Edwards beat N. F. Bedford, 6-1, 8-10, 6-1; D. G. France beat O. M. Bold, 6-3, 6-4. Final.—D. G. France beat N. V. Edwards, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2. Men’s Doubles Semi-finals. —France and Edwards beat J. W. Neale and Lyons, 6-3, 6-2; J. E. Hamilton and C. T. Macarthur beat P. Jacobsen and J. E. Walker, 6-2, 6-0 Final.—France and Edwards beat Hamilton and Macarthur, 6-2, 6-4. Women’s Singles Semi-finals.—Miss J. Douthett beat Miss M. Howe, 6-2, 6 ;4-Miss J. Nicholls beat Miss J. Beban, 6-4, 6-4. Final.—Miss J. Douthett beat Miss J. Nicholls. 6-0. 6-2. Women’s Doubles Semi-finals.—Misses J. Douthett and J. Burns beat Mesdames N. V. Edwards and Rickman, 6-2, 6-1; Mesdames D. G. France and Dykes beat Misses Forester and Carrell, 9-7, 6-3.
