LUCAS’S NELSON ALMANAC
DIARY AND YEAR BOOK FOR 1940 ON SALE TO-DAY Lucas’s Almanac, Diary and Year Book for 1940 will be on sale to-day. There is much information of wide general interest. The pages also con- ! tain for every day of the year, the j times of rising and setting of both I sun and moon, and the moon’s age j at noon, the latter being given in days I and decimals of a day, In addition !to this there is given information | which will enable observers to identi|fy the planets and brighter start ! visible throughout the year. SPECIAL NELSON CALCULATIONS The time of rising and setting of the sun and moon is the time of both first or last appearance of the sun or moon above the horizon and has been calculated for the position of the Atkinson * Observatory at Nelson. It i will therefore be found to vary ; slightly according to the position of i the observer. Throughout Nelson | and Marlborough and the West | Coast, however, the variation will be small and the time given for Nelson will be found to be sufficiently accurate for all practical purposes. The remainder of the astronomical information given is independent of the observer’s location. The time used is New Zealand Standard mean time. During the months in which the Summer Time Act is in operation, thirty minutes must be added. The tables have been computed and other data in astronomical notes compiled by Mr E. L. Morley for actual local conditions, a task of no mean order. The diary will be found convenient for many purposes, and the household receipts and expenditure columns appear as usual. There are 299 pages in the book, and the publishers always welcome suggestions for additions. Lucas’s Almanac, Diary and Year Book has been published each year since 1865.
