CERTIFICATION OF SEED WHEAT
SCHEME TO BE CONTINUED IN ENTIRETY [United Press Association] TIMARU, 24th November. Speaking at the Labour ball in Timaru to-night, the Minister of Industries and Commerce, Mr Sullivan, referred to the question of seed wheat certification, which has been exercising the minds of farmers in wheat-growing areas. Mr Sullivan said the Minister of Agriculture had advised him that because of the exigencies of war conditions it was felt that curtailment of the seed-wheat c tification scheme conducted by the Department of Agriculture could be considerably modified without prejudicing the interests of growers. As a result of representations made to the Minister of Agriculture by growers through officers of the Department of Agriculture, in which tribute was paid to the excellent results secured by the field staff in the work of certification and the fear was expressed that the wheat industry would be affected even by a temporary cessation of certification, Mr Lee Martin had agreed to continu with the scheme in its entirety for the coming season. In a telegram to Mr Sullivan to-day. Mr Lee Martin said he was pleased to note the wide appreciation of the seedwheat certification scheme which had been expressed bj farmers, and it was quite apparent that growers were agreed that the scheme had brought about a signal improvement in the quality of the Dominion wheat crops.
