BIBLE SCHOOL ANNIVERSARY SERVICES CONTINUED PRIZES PRESENTED On Monday evening another large audience assembled at the School of Music for the annual prize-giving and demonstration in connection with the Church of Christ Bible School anniversary services. The Superintendent, Mr A. E. Brough, presided and the school and choir rendered their special choral items, conducted by Mr J. K. Robinson and accompanied on the organ by Mr I. Inglis. The chairman in his remarks referred briefly to the year’s work and the aims and objects of the Bible School which were, he said, to teach faithfully the Bible and Bible truths, culminating in the special services, built around the great theme “Jesus Christ, King of Kings.” In his resume of the year’s work the speaker presented the following figures: The roll showed 76 in the Kindergarten, 88 in the Intermediate School. 27 in the Bible Classes and a teaching staff of 29, making a total of 220. The average attendance for the year was 171. whilst the highest was 192. During the year 53 scholars had secured perfect attendance awards, and 68 had gained 75 per cent, and over of the total possible marks, and so earned a prize.

In the Dominion Bible Schools’ examination, out of 49 entrants, 1 gained a third prize with 94 per cent.; 5 first class honours; 7 second class honours; 6 first class pass; 11 second class pass, and 11 passed. In concluding, the Superintendent expressed the thanks of the school to the conductor, Mr J. K. Robinson, organist Mr I. Inglis, and to all who had assisted towards making the services such a success. He also paid a tribute to the teachers and staff for their loyal service during the year. Before calling upon the Mayor, Mr G. L. Page, to present the prizes, Mr Brough mentioned that the school was opened early in February, 1893, and had been open continuously ever since. On the first Sunday there were ten present, amongst whom were Mr G. Page and his brother, Mr H Page. Mr Page, before presenting the prizes, paid a tribute to the first Superintendent of the school, Mr F. V. Knapp, and he appealed to the boys and girls to accept the Lord Jesus Christ early in life.

Following on the prize-giving the programme took the form of a season of pageantry and songs, designed to set forth the theme of the anniversary—- “ Jesus Christ, King of Kings.” The programme was entitled. “The Conquering Christ,” and was divided into five acts, in each of which was presented a hymn by the school and a scene of pageantry. The first scene was set in the time of the first Christian century; the second scene two or three centuries later, when the power of Greece and Rome had waned; and the remaining scenes in more modern times. Throughout all ran the thought that Christ conquers all; that love and faith are stronger than unbelief, fear and darkness; and that while earthly powers and systems have their day and cease to be, Christ and His Kingdom go on from strength to strength. The soloist was Mrs Hamilton, and duettists Joan and Shirley Wilkins. The annual children’s tea will be held at the Schoolroom, Waimea street, on Thursday.
