NELSON CITY COUNCIL FORTNIGHTLY MEETING LAST NIGHT CORRESPONDENCE AND REPORTS The fortnightly meeting of the Nelson City Council held last evening was attended by the Mayor (Mr G. L. Page). Councillors E. R. Neale, J. A. Harley. H. G. B. Hurst. L. C. Pettit. S. A. Gibbs, N. Rout. S. McArthur. S. W. Street, and F. H. Sharland. PAYMENTS The following payments were author- j ised from the various accounts: — £ s. d. The request was granted. The Nelson Amateur Athletic Club asked for adequate dressing accommodation at Trafalgar Park. The matter was referred to the Works Committee for inspection. The Nelson Combined Swimming Clubs applied for permission to hold the official opening at the Baths on the 28th October and for the use of the Baths for Club nights on Wednesday evenings. The request was granted. Mr E. Sowman wrote in connection with the erection of a telephone booth at Snow's Hill. It was decided to write to the P and T. Department suggesting that the booth be placed on the Council's property adjoining Mr Hopkins’s Store. The Rev. Father Seymour asked for permission to hold a religious procession on Sunday. 29th October, at 3 p.m The request was granted. Messrs Shone and Co. asked for the removal of a plane tree at the entrance to their Chapel in Collingwood street. The matter was referred to the Works Committee. The Waimea Electric Power Board lor warded an account for the percentage on the cost of transmission line, also advising that the Board is taking every possible step to finalise matters in connection with the Cobb scheme. The Power Board also forwarded a copy of a letter from the secretary of the Cobb River Electric Power Company in regard to the Cobb’scheme and also advised the Council that the matter of supply of power from the Diesel station at Stoke had been submitted to the Controller of Electricity. It was decided that the payment of the account be mode subject to amendment, under protest, and that the other letters be received. Messrs Pitt and Moore wrote in connection with the proposals of the Broken Hill Proprietary Company in respect to the Dun Mountain Scenic Reserve. The matter was referred to the Finance Committee for consideration. The Council gave permission to the Nelson Fire Board to appoint the City Engineer (Mr C. I. Kidson) as its supervising engineer in connection with the proposed alterations to the Fire Station. A plan of subdivision of part sections 450, 451 and 453 for Messrs J. A. R. N. and W. J. Harley was approved. A plan for the subdivision of part section 324 for Mrs A. Moore was approved. It was decided to take the necessary steps to declare as a public road the continuation of Victoria Crescent. REPORTS WORKS COMMITTEE A meeting of the Works Committee held on Tuesday. 24th October, was attended by Councillor Pettit (chairman),

the Mayor. Councillors Street. Sharland j and McArthur. The Committee reported and rccom- j mended as follows : As to the letter from the Amateur ! Athletic and Cycling Club asking that repairs be effected to the cycle track at Trafalgar Park: That the Club be in- : formed that the Council has no funds available for this work and that consideration must therefore be deterred. ; As to the letter from Mr R. G. Mac- j donald with regard to the piping of the ! ditch in Endeavour street: That the writer be informed that the Council j will carry out the work provided a con- j tribution of £l2 is made to cover the j cost of pipes. CITY ENGINEER The City Engineer (Mr C. I. Kidson) j reported for the fortnight ending 28th j October as follows : Streets and Footways.—A priming ! coat has been placed on Queen's road, j Victoria Heights. Mt. Pleasant Avenue, and portions of Victoria Crescent. The trenches in Cambria street and Tasman street have been sealed and portions of Cambria street have been given a priming coat. Priming will be carried out as much as possible in streets which are not affected by the new reticulation. In some cases, however, it will not be possible to do this. Quarry-—The Brook quarry is in continuous operation crushing stone for second-coat work. Drainage.—Routine overhaul of the ejectors is in hand. Stormwater Drainage.—The stormwater drain to the Tobacco Company’s lease has been completed, and improvements to Stafford Walk are in hand. Employment Scheme 13.—The following men are employed on Scheme 13: Formation of Stanley Crescent 20, retaining wall—reclamation 7. formation off Cleveland road 3. foreshore reclamation 7, Sands Reserve —cleaning 5; total 42. New Vehicles and Equipment.—The new body and hoist for the Guy truck have been completed and the vehicle j is in service once more. Baths. —The Baths were opened or. the 14th October Water. —A roof is being placed on the service reservoir on Britannia Heights and the area fenced in. The three-inch main in Nile street Fast is complete. Water pressure throughout the city has been satisfactory since the imposition of the hosing restrictions. Roding River Scheme. —The six-inch main in Washington Valley is in hand. The main tunnel is being driven at the vate of 400 feet a month and the diversion tunnel is about half-completed. It is hoped to put the Roding Weir in hand m the near future. Work for Other Departments.—A ga l - - main has been completed in Nile street East and concreting is in hand on lh»- ! switch-house at Hopkins's Store. ELECTRICAL ENGINEER The Electrical Engineer (Mr E. Fleming) reported for the fortnight ending 26th October as follows: — City applications 3508 (increase 2). city extensions 8072 (increase 26*; total 11.580 (increase 28). Lighting load applied for 2194 k.w. (increase 1 k.w.). heating load applied for 6863 k.w. (increase 21 k.w.), power load applied for 2673 k.w. (increase 5 k.w.); total, 11,730 k.w. (increase 27 k.w.w)w Peak Load—Day 600 k.w., night 875 k.w. The three-monthly returns herewith:

Total increase 64.053 The above figures are taken from the ledgers. The plant at the Power Station is operating satisfactorily and only minor adjustments have been found necessary. The sea circulating pipes for the turbine condenser have been cleared of marine growth. Annual leave of absence for the Power Station staff is due to commence this month, and I am arranging accordingly. Wc have installed to date 82 pre-pay-ment meters for the collection of bad debts. Present-day list contains another 71 accounts in arrears and the total cash involved is £260. I recommend the purchase of five dozen prepayment meters of the make as already installed. The report was adopted, except the question of purchasing prepayment meters, which was referred to the Finance Committee. SUPERINTENDENT OF RESERVES The report of the Superintendent of Reserves (Mr A. White) for the fortnight was as follows : Good progress is being made with the wall-garden in Trafalgar street South. Provision is being made for two garden seats which will be built into the stonework. Church Hill.—A start has been made with grading the south and east sides of this reserve. Summer bedding is now well forward and to date 53.712 seedlings have been pricked off. The glasshouses from the Reclamation Reserve are being removed to the new nursery.
