MAGISTRATE’S COURT

The following cases were dealt with n the Magistrate s Court this morning oy Mr T. E. Maunsell, S.M.: Frederick James Thurston was charged with, at Motupipi, delivering possession of a .22 calibre rifle to Alfred Henry Bickley who did not have a permit. Senior-Sergeant C. Petersen said that the defendant appeared to have been somewhat unfortunate. He gave the rifle to the other man without a permit but arranged for him to go to the police station, and gave him a certificate for that purpose, but the other man neglected to do so. Defendant was ordered to pay costs only, 10s. Three first offenders who were found in the Travellers’ Rest Hotel after hours were each fined £1 and 12s costs. Vivian Joseph Satherley, licensee of the Travellers’ Rest Hotel, was charged with unlawfully selling liquor after hours. The senior-sergeant said that the defendant had rather a bad record but since he was last before the Court there had been no complaints and defendant had been trying to run the hotel reasonably well. A fine of £3 and 12s costs was imposed. A first offender for drunkenness was convicted and discharged.
