CATHEDRAL CHOIR
ANNUAL CHORAL RECITAL At the Cathedral last evening the Choir gave its annual musical festival. The recitals are becoming increasingly popular, providing as they do a wealth of musical works which are alone heard to-day in church music. There was a large attendance and keen pleasure and appreciation was expressed in the work undertaken by the Choir under the able conduetorship of Mr H. S. Claughton, organist and choirmaster. The programme with the soloists was as follows : (a) Organ. "Improvisation on a Choral”; <b) Introit, "Jesu. Word of God Incarnate," (Ch. Gounod), Collects and the Lord's Prayer. Motett for soprano solo and chorus. "Hear My Prayer" (Mendelssohn), soloist, Mrs I. Grant and Choir). Organ solos. Miniatures of the Masters. <a> "Nocturne" (Schumann). (b) "Nantilus" (Sea Pieces) (McDowell), (c) “Chanson Triste" (Tschaikowskv), (d) "Reverie” (Schubert). Selections from "Elijah,” (a) duct, "What Shall I Render?” (Mendelssohn), (b) chorus. "Blessed are the Men.” Soloists, Miss Noni Moore and Mr L. Bourne. Part song, “My Task” (Ashford). Solo, the Dean. Contralto solo. "Shepherd's Cradle Song” (Somervell). Mrs H. S. Claughton Anthem. “Comes, at times, a Stillness as of Even.” (Woodward). Selections from "The Creation” (Hardon). (a) Tenor recit., “In Splendour Bright.” (b) trio and chorus, "The Heavens are Telling.” Soloists, Miss Noni Moore and Messrs K. S. Farmer and L. Bourne. Organ. Recessional Voluntary, “Tcccato” (D’Evry).
