ATHLETIC SEASON OPENED
LAST EVENING’S EVENTS SOME CREDITABLE PERFORMANCES Despite unpleasant weather conditions. good fields of athletes turned out for the opening of the 1939-40 athletic season last evening. The 880yds proved a good event, with J. Barron from scratch running a well-judged race to return the good time of 2min 4 3-ssec, a very creditable performance for the opening of the season. J. Brown won the 100yds junior in 10 3-ssec in convincing style from a strong field. Chapman won the 100yds senior, but found the 220yds harder, being content to run third to Don and Dixon. In the two ladies’ events M. Stokes started the season well by winning both from R. Ruffell. Two cycling events were included. Craig creating a surprise by defeating E. Langley in a half-mile. Next Wednesday a further meeting will be held when some longer distance events will be run off. RESULTS Following were the results of the various events: — 100yds junior handicap—J. Brown 1, H. Half mile cycle.—Craig 1. E. Langley 2. Weir 3. Time, lmin 55secs. 880yds handicap.—J. Barron 1, F. Don 2, A. Sinclair 3. Time, 2min 4 3-5 secs. Javelin throw handicap—A. Don, 144 ft 2in, 1, H. N. Crooks, 141 ft lOin, 2, A. Warren, 117 ft 9in, 3. 220yds junior—H. Ford 1, PI. N. Crooks 2. Time, 25 l-ssecs. 3 miles cycle—E. Langley 3, Craig 2, Weir 3. Time. 7min 23 3-ssecs. 220yds senior handicap—A. Don 1, Dixon 2, S. Chapman 3. Time, 24 3-5 75yds ladies’ —M. Stokes 1, R. Ruffell 2 .S. Barry 3. Time, 10 l-ssecs. Long jump handicap—A.
