Norris, W. L. Palmer, W. E. Poole and H. Stratford. Accounts passed for payment amounted to £362 Os sd. FOREMAN’S REPORT The foreman (Mr W. A. Andrews) reported as follows: — Since the last meeting two stopcocks have been repaired in Gladstone road. Three stone sumps have been made in Dorset and Church streets, and the stone drain at the cemetery is nearly completed. The grader has been worked on the state highway (NelsonWestport), also on Champion road, McShane's road. Lower Queen street, Beach road, Bateup’s road and Wcnsley road. The following metal, clay and stones had been carted with the truck: Lower Queen street. 18 yards metal; Oxford street footpath. 15 yards metal, and a further 63 yards of clay filling; Cemetery drain, 105 yards stones, and to the Dorset and Church street sumps, 18 yards of stones. CORRESPONDENCE The Registrar of Social Security advised that the council’s application for a short extension of authority for work under Scheme No. 13 to be completed has been forwarded to the Assistant Secretary, Department of Labour, Wellington. and that the council would be advised in due course. The South Island Travel Association submitted a copy of the report to be presented at the annual meeting of the association to be held in Christchurch on 27th October. This was received. The Waimea Electric Power Board wrote confirming the arrangement for taking over the replacement of street lamps as from Ist November, and re installation of the street lighting system to commence during November. CENTENNIAL CELEBRATIONS Reports were received of recent meetings of both the Nelson Provincial Centennial Council and the Nelson Provincial Patriotic Council. The Mayor stated that he and other representatives of the borough had attended these meetings. As far as the centennial was concerned, he continued, it had been decided to go ahead with the celebration of the occasion, and Richmond would be the first among the various centres, the date being 24th February. This would be followed by Nelson commencing a gala week on 25th February- Other places would follow in sequence as far as possible. Referring to the Nelson Patriotic Council, Mr Tuffnell stated that it apoeared at the moment that little or nothing could be done in the way of organising local effoi'ts for raising funds. It was fully realised, he said, that everyone was anxious to do something to help, but until some lead was forthcoming from the Government it seemed inadvisable to call a further meeting of the public. Following some discussion on the subject it was resolved that a recommendation be made to the Nelson Provincial Patriotic Council that permission be asked of the Minister of Internal Affaires for the approval of the raising and collection of funds for the relief of widows and dependents of those members overseas of the military, naval and air forces who have lost their lives in the war. FIRST-AID WORK The Director-General of the N.Z. Red Cross Society wrote stating that he hoped to be in the district next month with a view to forming branches of the society, but that in the meantime steps could be taken to form branches and commence the training of students. The Mayor stated that a very enthusiastic and active class was already receiving training in first-aid work, and it was thought inadvisable to set up any other similar organisation in the meantime. It was resolved that the matter be left in abeyance pending the visit of the Director-General of the Society.
