PATRIOTIC FUNDS

EFFORTS WILL BE NECESSARY LATER PUBLIC URGED TO BE READY LITTLE CAN BE DONE AT PRESENT Numerous enquiries have recently been made as to the necessity for some patriotic effort in connection with the present war and the following statement is issued by the executive of the Nelson Provincial Patriotic Council for public information: "It is now generally known that the raising of funds and the collecting of goods for patriotic purposes are controlled by the Patriotic Purposes Emergency Regulations. Under these Regulations, money and goods may be collected only for such patriotic purposes as the Minister of Internal Affairs may from time to time approve. At the moment the only patriotic purpose approved by the Minister is ‘The supply during the war of comforts, conveniences and special equipment to members of His Majesty’s New Zealand Forces.’ “The Provincial Council has made representations to the Minister seeking information as to the class of goods that are required or are likely to be required and generally enquiring what work can be usefully undertaken. “In reply to these representations the Council has been advised as follows: ‘At the present time enquiries are being made in New Zealand and in the United Kingdom as to what particular class of comforts etc., are most desirable and, as soon as definite information is available. it will be made known.’ ‘‘The executive is of the opinion that until the desired information is received from the Minister, little can be done. In the meantime residents are urfed to hold themselves in readiness for the effort which will no doubt be necessary.
