DAVIS CUP TIE

WON BY AUSTRALIA BROMWICH AND QUIST WIN SINGLES [United Press Association] ■ (Received 28th August, 9.50 a.m.) NEW YORK, 27th August. | In the Australian-Yugoslavian Davis i Cup tie singles, Bromwich defeated Mitic 6-1, 6-3, 6-2; and Quist defeated Kukuljevic 6-2, 6-3, 6-4. Although Bromwich played indifferently at times he was able to win easily, assisted by Mitic's repeated errors. Bromwich’s win put Australia into the j Davis Cup challenge round for the I fourteenth time. ' There was some mediocre tennis in ' the match between Quist and Kukuljevic. Quist was obviously disappointed j since he had hoped to play Punc^c. Puncec frankly explained: “Coming ver in the boat we expected to be beaten 5-0. We therefore planned to play Kukuljevic and Palada in the last matches, and so when we lost the decisive match we decided to play Kukulievic instead of me. I have a good grass court rating, and do not want to risk losing it.” The “Boston Transcript” sporis editor, commenting on the change said it was a poor display of sportsmanship as under the circumstances there was a chance for the match to have a bearing on the world’s number one ranking.
