ALL SAINTS’ PARISH

MISSIONARY DAY OF GIVING A VERY ENCOURAGING RESPONSE GIFT OF £6OO The Rev. Canon J. W. Bloyce, Vicar of Brightwater, and the Rev. N. W. S. Chambers, Vicar of the Sounds Parochial district were the special preachers ' at the services at All Saints’ yesterday. The Rev. R. C. Nicholson and the Rev. Raymond Simpson assisted at the morning service and the Vicar, the Rev. Canon Haultain took Evensong. The vestry gave encouragement and help to the Missionary Service League branch of the Church Missionary Society by co-operating so that all offerings over and above the average Sunday collection would go to the Missionary Service League to be allocated towards the parish missionary quota in support of the overseas work of the Church Missionary Society. The total offerings for the day were £66. St. Stephen’s, Tahuna, also contributed over £3. At the early service a note was handed in bearing these encouraging words: “On this M.S.L. day of prayer and giving towards our parish quota my free will offering is a gift of £6OO. I desire that this gift be forwarded through the All Saints’ parish M.S.L. to the New Zealand Church Missionary Society separate from our parish quota, to be used for spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ both here and elsewhere. The deeds in connection therewith will be handed to the treasurer of the local committee of the C.M.S.” The signature was that of a well known parishioner of All Saints’ who has the interests of the M.S.L. and the C.M.S. very much at heart. In the Anglican service of Holy Communion the words “alms and oblations” occur. They refer to gifts in cash (alms) and gifts in kind (oblations). The latter were very usual gifts in the early centuries as they are in the mission field to-day. The deeds in connection with this splendid gift could be thought of as Oblations and therefore the Alms and oblations on this Day of Giving at All Saints’ yesterday amounted to over £669. Since yesterday a further £l2 has been received, increasing the total by that amount.
