The Bratislava correspondent of the Associated Press in Great Britain reports that the radio station announced: •‘Owing to the existing situation Germany has taken military posession of Slovakia.” ANNOUNCEMENT MADE IN ENGLISH (Received 19th August. 12.15 p.m.) LONDON. 19th August. The Bratislava announcement of the taking over of Slovakia was for some unexplained reason made in English, which few Slovakians understand. It is reliably learned that the German-Slovak defence agreement places the Slovak : -my of 30.000 and reservists numbering 300.000 under German command. FURTHER PRESSURE ON HUNGARY (Received 19th August. 12.45 p.m.) LONDON. 18th August. “The Times” says that Germany’s establishment of a military protectorate over Slovakia has not surprised London. It enables Germany to put further pressure on Hungary while it strengthens and deepens the Reich’s south-eastern flank in the event of war against Poland.
