THE MAIN SOUTH EXIT

(To The Editor] Sir,—l wonder if any of your readers can give a reasonable explanation of what is attached to a newly published road map? The lollowing wording is attached by a separate sticker, evidently an after-thought: “In the Nelson City outlets diagram, motorists should take the road marked in brown to the wharf, and along the waterfront known as the Rocks Road, as the main south exit. Another main south route is via Wai-

mea street along Waimea road connecting with the main south highway. ' Since when has the Rocks Road been declared “The Main South Exit” and by whom ? When the tide is in. the Port road a very delightful drive, but from the point of view of safety, that narrow road, with numbers of side street from the hillside to it. does not compare in any way. with the main south exit via Waimea road, which has been the southern outlet ever since Nelson has been Nelson. Waimea road, approximately two miles shorter, a fine wide street eliminates the danger possibility to a far greater degree than does Rocks road, because of its being so narrow. A great sum of money has been spent on the Bihopdale deviation, which has made Waimea Road one of the finest outlets of any town I know of In the Dominion. Of course no one would say that in spite of the narrowness, etc., of the Rocks Road that it is not an important wav into, and out of Nelson, but it is absurd to acclaim it as the main exit out of town. Every body surely knows that since about 1842 Waimea road was. and is still the main exit south.—l am. etc ,
