It is composed almost entirely of German citizens and it would never incorporate with Poland. To give it to Germany at present would block Poland’s only access to the sea. Sir Walter suggested cutting a canal from the Vistula to Gdynia, connecting Poland’s port with Vistula, and thus eliminating the necessity of using Danzig, and Germany England. France and Poland being invited to contribute to the cost, which would be less than one day s war. Sir Walter Carpenter commenced business at Thursday Island and founded J. B Carpenter and Sons in 1899 He was Mayor of Thursday Island for j two years.
