“YOUNG DR. KILDARE”
»..e drama that exists behind the scenes in a great hospital is re-enacted with rare power in “Young Dr. Kildare.” Lew Ayres is excellent in the title role with Lionel Barrymore, Lynne Carver, Nat Pendleton, Jo Ann Sayers and Samuel S. Hinds. The story presents a realistic view of life inside the walls of a metropolitan hospital to-day. Ayres, as an interne, encounters his first difficulty when he protects a fellow doctor who has failed to save the life of an influential politician. Again he becomes involved in trouble when he opposes the diagnosis of a prominent psychiatrist who declares a girl patient to be a mental case. lor this Kildare is dismissed. His friend and ally is the veteran Dr Gillespie, portrayed by Barrymore, whose performance is superb. Eventually, young Doctor Kildare proves himself and is reinstated, opening the way to a career and marriage with nis boyhood sweetheart, played by the charming Lynne Carver. Jo Ann Sayers is excellent as the tragic daughter of a rich man who is the innocent cause of Kildare’s difficulty. He saves her from attempted selfdestruction and later quarrels with his superior who contends she is insane. Dismissed from the hospital stafT. he devotes himself to proving her sanity. The story has been treated with dramatic restraint and the technical arid artistic effects are all that could be desired. Harold Bqcquct’s direction places him among the most able men of his profession. ’Y rf Olivia de Havilland has been loaned by Warner Bros, to play a co-starring role with David Niven in Samuel Goldwyn's forthcoming production “Raffles,” scripted by John Balderston.
