TO SIM) MONEY Oi l O! NEW ZEALAND POSITION OF AUSTRALIAN TRADESMEN IN DOMINION > 1 hilt'll rust* Ai-MMhtlii.il WELLINGTON. 28th June. ‘‘All sorts of devices are being used at the present time to send money out of New Zealand." said the Minister of Housing, the Hon. H. T. Armstrong, today when his attention was drawn to 1 statements made in Auckland that arsans who had been brought to New , Zealand from Australia under contract to the Government were unable to remit money to their wives and famiTt the statements are correct then this position must be rectified.” added Mr Armstrong. "If a carpenter or some other workman genuinely wants to send money to Australia to his wife or other dependents no obstacle should he placed in his way, but that is a question for the Finance Department to deal with. As Minister of Housing and the Minister responsible for the im- 1 portation of a number of men from overseas I have not had a single complaint of this sort. If complaints were being made naturally I would expect to receive them. Seeing that married men engaged in Australia were inform-| ed that no accommodation was avail-j able for their wives and families in New Zealand it is only reasonable that they should be permitted to remit money to their homes. "At the same time the Government has to be careful that a channel is not created through which money may easily flow out of New Zealand. Members of the Government are coming ;o the conclusion that an organised attempt is being made to transfer money out of the country in small amounts i which become large in the aggregate , That is what the Government has lo i guard against.”
