STEEL INDUSTRY
1 AUSTRALIA RIGHT UP-TO-DATE (United Press Association! WELLINGTON. This Day. According to Mr H. J. Buck, manager of John Lysaght Ltd., Wellington, who returned yesterday from a visit to Australia there is no doubt that Australia is right up-to-date in the steel industry The Port Kembla mills are probably the most modern in the world. Both the Port Kembla and Newcastle plants are very busy fulfilling British Government orders for air raid protection turning out 14 guage sheets curved and cut ready for assembling directly they arrive in England Mr Buck said he had been over the new plant of the Commonwealth Rolling Mills, set up to turn out finished sheets for motor-car production for the whole of Australia. These works were just coming into production and from what he saw they were turning out a magnificent job. He mentioned also the works of Stewart and Lloyd for the manufacture of solid drawn tubes, which expected to go into production this week.
One of the most striking things about these modern plants was the comparatively few men needed to work them.
