FUNCTION OF HIGH COMMISSIONER
TO EXPLAIN “WHERE THE SHOE PINCHES” SIR HARRY BATTERBEE AT CHRISTCHURCH (United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. “My function is to explain to the people in Britain where the shoe pinches in New Zealand and to the people in New Zealand where the shoe pinches in England.” This explanation of his duties was given by Sir Harry Batterbee, High Commissioner for the United Kingdom in New Zealand, who arrived from Wellington this morning.
British policy was to settle differences by friendly round-the-table con-
ferences, and he was in New Zealand for that purpose, just as Mr W. J. Jordan, New Zealand High Commissioner, was in London. By familiarising himself with conditions in New Zealand, which necessitated visits to all parts of the Dominion, he could supplement official despatches, giving them a personal note. As he was previously a civil servant and without any political leanings his task was made somewhat lighter. He added that another of his duties was to strengthen the ties binding New Zealand to the Old Country.
