One of three men arrested simultaneously in a police raid on Saturday afternoon, Mervyn Walter Rae pleaded guilty in the Police Court tq a charge of using premises in Pitt street as a common gaming house. The police said that the premises were also used as a stationery shop. There had been a number of complaints about bookmaking. Defending counsel said that Rue look over the shop seven weeks ago and found that the customers wanted to place bets. At first he refused them, but later succumbed to the temptation. Bookmaking had been unprofitable and he was £SO out of pocket. The Magistrate, Mr Orr-Walker. imposed a fine of £25, and allowed Rae fourteen days to pay.
