QUESTIONS TOO DIFFICULT

EIRST-YEAR NURSES EXAMINERS ASTONISHED REPORT TO AUCKLAND HOSPITAL BOARD lUnited Press Ae*ociatioi< AUCKLAND, 12th June. The difficulty of questions on anatomy and physiology included in the examination for first-year nurses astonished the board of examinei's of Auckland Hospital. Reporting to the hospital board to-night, the chairman of the examining board. Dr. E. H. B. Milsom, said it was unanimously thought that the questions were more suitable

to an examination for second or third-) year medical students. Dr. Milson stated that the examin-j ing board had read with astonishment I the questions set in anatomy and phy-j siology for first-year nurses. This was' the first State examination. and the! paper was set under the authority of ! the Nurses and Midwives’ Registration Board. As the questions were much too difficult for first-year nurses to answer, a letter had been sent to the examining authority calling attention to the results of the nurses’ examinations. Dr. Milson said that in the third year all 31. candidates passed, but in the second • year 15 of 54 nurses had failed. , : The standard of education amongi ■ some of the candidates was not very high, and to be able to qualify as a ■ ful’v-trained nurse needed a reasonably ! education. However, provided the ■ nurse had been diligent and was in ; other ways suitable, it seemed a pity : on neral principles to turn away

trainees who could not make “full grade” when there was a shortage of help. “The report of the examiners is somewhat illuminating,” said the chairman, Mr A. Moody. “It has been stated that the standard of the questions set the first-year nurses is altogether too high. I am informed that some of the junior doctors had difficulty in answering them.” In receiving the report the board decided to make representation to the j Nurses and Midwives’ Registration Board on the difficulty of the examination.
