NELSON TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD

HANDICRAFT CIRCLE The “Mayfair” was filled to capacity on Thursday afternooon when the members of the Nelson Townswomen’s Guild Handicraft Circle were treated to a delightful afternoon by Miss M. Stewart, Arts Mistress of the Girls’ College. Mrs J. Walker, president of the Guild, welcomed Miss Stewart, and said that the large audience was ample proof of the interest taken in her lecture. Miss Stewart then related the origin of embroidery and described how it had developed down through the ages. The speaker stressed the point that good needlework required good materiaL Miss Stewart then showed a large number of pieces of her work, and described each one. These were handed round to the members, who later on were invited to ask questions as to cost of material, different stitches, and suitable cottons, many availing themselves of the opportunity. The variety of stitches, designs and colours were a treat indeed, and the handicraft circle members will now feel very much wiser. Mrs PyeSmith, leader of the circle, then asked Miss Stewart to accept a dainty shoulder spray from the circle, members showing their appreciation by acclamation. Visitors were present from Marton, Blenheim, Brightwater, Tasman, Richmond, and Stoke.
