THIEF MAKES ESCAPE
CIVILIANS AND POLICE IN PURSUIT 1 AUCKLAND, 9th June. j ; A middle-aged woman. Miss Alice ‘ Molloy, Grafton, had her bag snatched 1 from her hand while she was walking i down Queen Street near the entrance ! to Mvcrs Park to-night. In spite of a determined chase by ■ ! two civilians and a thorough search by d ; detectives the man escaped, a j Mis.; Molloy said she was walking e!along when suddenly a man stepped, ■-[out from behind a hoarding, gave her ,t a sharp push and grabbed the bag II she was carrying under her arm. it | She screamed as she stumbled and (l I her cries attracted the attention of two cl men on the opposite side of the street, >t As they looked in her direction they i- saw the man disappear in the darkness behind the hoarding. They immediaten ly started in pursuit, and, near the d children's playing area, they caught sight of the man picking himself up from a fall over a scat. He kept to the darker patches in the park and was thus able to make his escape. A passer-by rang central police, and a squad of detectives was dispatched to comb the neighbourhood but the man had too much start.
