FIRE AT GREYMOUTH CAFE
NARROW ESCAPE OF OCCUPANTS RESCUE EFFECTED BY LADDER I United Press Association) GREYMOUTH, This Day. As the result of a fire at 4 o’clock this morning, serious damage was done to the interior of a brick building occupied by the Central Cafe. Mrs Pope, proprietress, her son, Mr J. Pope, and a friend. Miss M. Coyne. of Westport, were sleeping at the rear of the premises and escaped by a skylight and scrambled over the roofs of adjoining buildings. They were rescued by means of a ladder. The fire started in the kitchen, which was gutted. The dining room was damaged by smoke, water and heat, but little damage was done to the back of the premises.
The insurances were £1250 on the building with the South British Insur ance Co., and £2OO on the stock and fittings with the Alliance Company. Mrs Pope is a h avy loser.
