DUNITE DEPOSITS
SYDNEY FIRM INTERESTED PROSPECTING LICENSE FOR CAWTHRON PARK APPLICATION TO NELSON CITY COUNCIL A large Sydney firm is at present interesting itself in the dunite deposits on the Dun mountain, and last night’s meeting of the Nelson City Council had before it an application for consent to a prospecting license being issued in respect to part of Cawthron Park.
The Town Clerk (Mr F. Mitchell) stated that an application had been made at a sitting of the Warden’s Court in Nelson for a representative of a large Sydney firm to enter and have leave to peg an area on the Dun mountain for the getting out of dunite. Provision could be made under such a right for the filling in of holes, and other safeguards regarding the destruction of bush, including the lodging of sufficient security to cover any such costs. The Cawthron Park property, under the control of the City Council,
was subject to a Deed of Trust which allowed the Council to rent part of th»» area for mining purposes so long as i no serious interference was caused to j the use of the park as a public rec- j reation area, and any rentals were to j be used for improvements on the park, j The City Engineer (Mr J. G. Littlejohn) pointed out that the Dun mountain was part of the catchment area for the Roding water sceme.
The matter was referred to the Reserves Committee for full investigation before reporting to the council.
