RESIGNATION OF HOUSING INSPECTOR

STOP-WORK MEETING IN AUCKLAND MINISTER ASKED TO INVESTIGATE [United Press Association! AUCKLAND, 9th May. A request to the Minister of Housing, Mr Armstrong, to visit Auckland on Friday and investigate the causes of the recent resignation of the Housing Construction Department inspector in the Auckland district, Mr E. Hedley, was forwarded to the Minister by telegram following a stop-work meeting of the staff of the Housing Construction Department in Auckland. The meeting was fully attended by men from all sections of the staff. A statement issued subsequently said that the following telegram was sent to the Minister:— “A full meeting of the housing staff in Auckland was held to-day and a report of the meeting was lodged with the Press to-day. It was resolved that while affirming our loyalty to the department and the Government, we appeal to you personally to investigate the fundamental causes of our inspector’s resignation with a view to their removal and that you meet the staff here at a further meeting on Friday at three o’clock to hear our case and complete your investigation.”

It was stated that the Minister was invited to the meeting some days ago but was not present. Those present were unanimously agreed that their action in holding a stop-work meeting was necessary.

It is understood that the Minister and the Director of Housing Construction, Mr Tyndall, will visit Auckland on Friday.
