THE COMPETITIONS
LAST DAY FOR ELOCUTION JUDGING CONTINUED THIS MORNING The Nelson Competitions’ Society’s fifth festival entered on its third day to-day. A large tap dancing class (12 and over) was judged this morning and the two xecalls will be seen at this evening’s concert. The girl’s song (under 10) and the action song (under 10) were pleasing sections heard at the Oddfellows’ Hall, this morning. Rex Nobbs, Josephine Tunnicliffe and Barbara Oliver, b.c.; Eileen Hunter (Tahunanui) c. “There was some very good footwork in the section but competitors must pay more attention to time and rhythm and not commence a new step in the middle of a phrase of music,” commented Miss Horne. Skipping dance, under 9.—Margaret Leighs, 1; Ula Drummond, 2; Betty Smith, 3. Russian dance. 12 and over—Shirley Hargreaves and Eileen Hunter recalled; Shirley Lock, 3 and v.h.c. Barefoot dance (not Eastern) under 9.—Margaret Leighs, “Slave Child”, 1; Betty Smith “Untamed” 2; Margaret Chase, “Narcissi”, 3. VOCAL AND INSTRUMENTAL (Judge: Mr F. Wcnworth Slater) Piano solo under 14.—Alice Anderson and Anne Stedman recalled; Shirley Lock 3 and v.h.c. Girls’ song, under 10 (“Tip Toe”). — Ula Drummond, 1; Jocelyn Shale, 2; Marcelle Snow (Motucka) 3 and v.h.c.; Jean Sutcliffe, Barbara Swafford and Elizabeth Fleming, h.c. Light popular song, lady or gentleman, own selection. —Mr Edwin Winter “Goodbye” and Miss Jean McKenzie, “Pipes of Pan,” recalled; Mr Arthur Rose (Marlborough) and Mr Alan Johnston, h.c. “The first thing required is a light tripping style,” said the judge. “That is apart from any interpretation or colour. I was pleased with the section altogether though one or two were inclined to be a little heavy. Some of the voices were very sweet indeed. The winner got the whole spirit of the song, at a nice tempo, with a delicate rhythm all through the song.”
Action song, boy or girl, under 10— Marcelle Snow (Motueka) “To a Miniature’, 1; Ula Drummond, “Where is the land of ‘I dunno where’?”, 2; Elizabeth Fleming 3.
The judge regretted that there were not more than four entries in this section. An action song was more difficult to do without properties, he addfed. The work of the winner was more appropriate and the girl was steadier with her voice, but there was a little lack of rhythm.
