AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION MONTHLY MEETING LAST EVENING 47 NEW MEMBERS—TOTAL NOW 1863 The monthly meeting of the Automobile Association (Nelson) was held last evening when there were present Messrs A. Gould (chairman). J. A. Harley. F. C. Smallbone. C. Hunter. J. R. Leggo. E. A. Bone. H. J. Savage. A. Bensemann, G. Cunningham. W. R. Grace and E. Fleming, the Secretary (Mr E. R. Neale) and Patrol Officer •Mr N. M. McLaren). The president. Dr. S. A. Gibbs and Mr C. M. Rout (vice president) were excused on account of absence from Nelson, and apologies were also received from Dr. W. D. S. Johnston. Dr. J. R. Closs. Messrs L. N. Montgomery. F. Jarrett. W. R. Martin and R. A. Stedman The Association decided to send a letter of condolence to Mr H Coltman in the recent tragic death of his son. The Commissioner of Crown Lands «Mr P. R. Wilkinson) forwarded a letter concerning negotiations for making additions to the Wangamoa bush reserve. WAKATU ROAD IMPROVEMENTS A reply was received to representations made to the Main Highways Board for improvements to the road and a footpath near Major Elliott’s property at Wakatu. The Waimea County Council, to whom the matter had been referred, had replied that it had no proposal to offer. It was decided to again approach the County Council on the matter. S.I.M.U. QUARTERLY MEETING The S.I.M.U. advised that the quarterly meeting would be held at Christchurch on the 26th June. LIGHTS ON CYCLES On the motion of Mr Fleming it was decided that the S.I.M.U. be written to asking that representations be made for regulations concerning lights on cycles and vehicles generally be enforced. Mr Fleming suggested that the Traffic Inspectors give more attention on the roads at night time. DISTINGUISHING LIGHTS ON TRUCKS At the last meeting enquiries were made concerning distinguishing lights ort widely loaded vehicles, especially trucks and a letter on the subject was sent to the S.I.M.U. The S.I.M.U. reported that a sub-committee had made recommendations to the Road Safety Council which had adopted the recommendations. The report slated that it was agreed that distinguishing lights should be on loaded vehicles or trailers, which created a potential danger on the roads at night. USE OK SCHOOL GROUNDS AFTER HOURS The secretary reported that only one j reply had been received to enquiries! concerning the use of school grounds after school hours. The only reply so far was from the Wellington Education | Board, which stated that under the by- j laws the head teacher had to see that I all children were off the grounds by 4j p.m. except when organised games were J in progress until a later hour.
