DEFENCE LEAGUE
AIMS AND OBJECTS SUPPORTED BY TAKAKA COUNTY COUNCIL DISCUSSION AT TO-DAY’S MEETING (By Telegraph—Own Reportre) Mr J. Roche, chairman of the Takaka branch of the New Zealand Defence League, and Dr. Bydder waited on the Takaka County Council to-day asking the council if it thought fit to endorse tho aims and objects of the Defence League, and give the movement moral support. Dr. Bydder, who acted as spokesman, dealt briefly with the danger threatening the Empire and New Zealand, and the urgent need for adequate defence in New Zealand’s defenceless state. In the event of war they must “get it in the neck” because they were a most enviable place with their large food supply and other resources. A defence force suffiicent to prevent invasion of the country was essential. The attitude of the Government was very much to be deplored, as there did not appear to be sufficient realisation of the dangers. The Defence League was ready to undertake all activities that would lead to the defence of New Zealand. The chairman (Councillor A. H. Rose) endorsed what the deputation had said. New Zealand was in a frightfully unprepared state to cope with any invasion. It was all very well to say that so many men were available, but you cculd not have discipline with untrained men. It was absolute murder to attempt to fight without training. Councillor Sparrow endorsed what the chairman had said. It was satisfactory to see Dr. Bydder and others taking the matter up. He would heartily support a resolution. Councillor Walker: “There is no organisation \yb.<jteyer.” The chairman; .“WeTniist al&olbe properly’equipped.” . , *\.V . - It was unabiinbusly. decided.
