FIRST PRIZE WINNER
MINER AT WHANGARE! BEEN THROUGH HARD TIMES WHANGAREI. This Day Mr R. Stewart, Ewings road, a Whangarci miner, who haj not been employed in a mine for the past five years, finds it very hard to realise he is a comparatively rich man this morning. With the nom de plume “Optimist,” he has won £2OOO in "You Never Know” Art Union. Mrs Stewart, who heard the news on the radio, was shaking with excitement when her husband arrived home from work. Since he was thrown out of employment at Hikurangi five years ago Mr Stewart has known ! .ard times. He has been employed on various types of casual work until about 18 months ago when he obtained a labouring job in the Whangarei Lime Company. He has three young children. Mr Stewart said this morning that he has obtained a tunnelling job in Hawkes Bay district, which will commence at the end of this month. He had been saving from his limited earnings to make the shift. “Now I’ll be able to move to Hawkes Bay without much difficulty,” he commented.
