SUDDEN CHANGE OF POLICY
WILLING TO JOIN IN MILITARY ALLIANCE FOREIGN OFFICE DECLINES TO COMMENT (Received 9tn May. f 1.15 am.» i TOKIO. Bth May. It is reported that Japan, notwithstanding the previous official announcement to Italy and Germany proposing defensive agreements in the nature of mutual assistance pacts against aggression rather than true military alliances has now decided to join the RomeBerlin Axis in a military alliance, and the necessary negotiations will be completed without delay. The Japanese Foreign 'Office declines to comment on the report. An earlier message staAed that the War Minister. General Itagaki said today that it was a mattery for congratulation that Italy and Germany were ! now linked up in a military pact to maintain peace. It was not impossible that Japan might conclude a military agreement with the Axis Powers if Italy and Germany wanted it. He added that the moral spirit «of the anti-Comin-tern Pact was very deep-rooted The Minister of.
