MR EDEN’S SUPPORT
ONLY POLICY POSSIBLE (Received 14th April. 12.50 p.m.) LONDON, 13th April. Mr Anthony Eden <C.) said the ob-
ject was not encirclement but provision of an organisation affording a basis for negotiations. There was no hope of bettering the situation until respect for international engagement was restored. It was a formidable task but the policy that the House of Commons had already endorsed was the only one by which it could be achieved. IMPORTANCE OF RUSSIA In the House of Lords Lord Snell approved of the assurances to and Rumania. Referring to the continuance of the Anglo-Italian Agreement, he said he did not like to assume that Britain was buying Italy from Spain by making no noise about the Albanian situation. They key seemed to be a British, French and Soviet declaration of peace and the intention to resist aggression, which would secure United States goodwill and give new hope to small nations. Other speakers supported the Government’s action, urging the powers to mobilise industry, wealth and manpower. and stressing the importance of Russian support. Lord Hailfax, in reply, said he fully recognised Russia’s importance. There were difficulties in this matter which I were not of British making. It would , not be Britain’s fault if it were not ' overcome. i Back benchers continued the debate, ; discussing the possibility of United 1 States co-operation and agreeing that i attempts from Europe to influence United States opinion would not be i helpful.
