NOBLE ADAMS SHIELD NARROW WIN FOR NELSON CHALLENGE BY WEST COAST j CENTRE Six rinks representing the West Coast Bowling Centre, visited Nelson yesterday afternoon to play for the Nable Adams Shield, the match being 1 played on the Nelson Green. Mr A. H. Crawley. President of the Nelson Bowling Centre, welcomed the j visitors, and expressed the pleasure it | afforded the Nelson bowlers to meet in j friendly combat the sporting West | Coasters. Three of the visiting rinks j had been in Nelson participating in the . Easter Jubilee tournament. Mr Crawley then presented Jubilee Badges to the-West Coast rinks which had come through specially to make up the six rinks to compete for the shield. Mr T. Bowes, in the absence of Mr Bunt. Vice-President of the West Coast Centre, who was in charge of the i visitors, thanked Mr Crawley for the very warm welcome, and especially 1 for the fine gesture in presenting Nel- j son Bowling Club Jubilee Badges to , those members of the West Coast team i who were not fortunate enough to have j been in Nelson for the tournament. The game which had rather a sen- [ sational finish was won by Nelson by a , margin of one. Dee and Mercer were ! the last to finish, and the match hung j in the balance to the last head. Mercer was lying two when he went down to play. Dee with his first bowl put the j kitty in the ditch and lay one. Mer- | cer with his first bowl then drew the ■ j shot at the edge of the ditch, but his 1 i second bowl was unplaced, leaving j j Nelson the holders of the shield. West ! . Coast made a great effort to secure the j j coveted trophy, and were heartily ap- ! j plauded. ! At the conclusion of the match Mr Bowes congratulated the Nelson Centre on retaining the shield, and thanked them for the excellent game that had been so much enjoyed by all. Mr Eric Moss, of the Greymouth Club, also thanked Mr Crawley for his indefatigable attention and kindness. This was Mr Moss’ sixteenth annual visit to the Nelson Easter tournaments, and he hoped to continue the habit of coming to Nelson. Mr Moss then, on behalf of Mr “Nuffield” Robertson, an outstanding number three player in the Greymouth rinks, presented a pipe to Mr Crawley as a small token of appreciation of the excellent time that had been provided right throughout the tournament. Mr Crawley, in replying, thanked Mr Bowes and the members of his team for the wonderful afternoon’s sport provided. and hoped they would have the pleasure of meeting again next season. To Mr Moss and Mr Robertson Mr Crawley expressed his sincere thanks for the kindly remarks and the present of the pipe which he would always aeeply appreciate. Cheers were then given for the ladies who kindly dispensed refreshments.
