JUBILEE TOURNAMENT WON BY MAITAI RINK F. PERRONE HAS EASY WIN OVER W. DEE IN FINAL CONSISTENT PERFORMANCE BY WINNING TEAM The Nelson Bowling Club's Jubilee tournament was won by F. Peronne’s Maitai rink which beat W. Dee (Nelson) by 26 to 16 in the final played on the Nelson Club's upper green yesterday afternoon. Perrone gained a very handsome early lead with four on the first head, three on the second, three on the third, and one on the fourth, making the score 11—0 in his favour. Dee was thus faced with a very difficult uphill fight throughout. After the eleventh head Dee had eleven against fifteen, and he had a good fighting chance. He held that position for several heads, the score after the thirteenth head being Perrone 16. Dee 12. However. Perrone’s team, particularly the lead and the skip, were all playing good bowls, and after the fourteenth the result was never in doubt, the game being abandoned on the 20th head. The winning rink was J. McLean, M. Lauria, W. R. Martyn, F. Perrone (s ). In the final, however, A. de Lorensen substituted for Lauria, who was indisposed. The runners-up were: R. Fletcher, A. G. Stewart. W. J. S. Smith, W. Dee <s). ' When the skips went up on the first | head Perrone was one up, but Dee burnt the head. On the replay Dee' bumped out the shot and lay near kitty’ - . Perrone’s first bowl trailed kitty to give him three, and he sent up an additional counter with his last, giving the Maitai rink four on the first head. On the second head Fletcher sent up two fine leads and stewart made it j three. Smith sent up a good one making Dee four when the skips went down. Perrone drew the shot with his first and with his second moved kitty : to give Perrone three on the head. : Perrone 3, Dee 0. The third hea& saw Perrone take another three, making the total 10 —0 in favour of Maitai. Perrone’s team was outplaying their opponents, and the fourth head added one to Perrone’s total. 11—0. Perrone was two up on the fifth when Stewart burnt the head for Dee. Dee then opened his account with one. Dee 1, Perrone 11. Dee burnt the sixth head, and then hy good bowling he took out two of Perrone’s and won the head by two. Dee 3, Perrone 11. Three went to Perrone on the seventh, making Perrone 14. Dee 3. The leads were responsible for good bowling in the eight, and de Lorensen followed to take the shot from Fletcher. : Perrone won the head by one. Per- . rone 15. Dee 3. | The ninth saw Dee add 2 to this score after Stewart had sent up a good head I from the shot. Dee 5. Perrone 15 | Stewart put his first on kitty in the tenth, and Dee won the head by three, j Dee 8. Perrone 15. The eleventh saw Fletcher within inches of kitty, but McLean beat it. Then Stewart took the shot with a great drawing bowl. De Lorensen then bumped Stewart out and took the shot. | Dee was one down when he burnt the ■ head. Dee was two up on the head when his opponents’ next four balls all were drives, and were wasted. Dee then held an advantage of 4. Perrone’s last was a drive and he sent kitty through to give Dee three on the head, making the score: Perrone 15. Dee 11. On the 12th head. Dee’s first trailed the kitty to place him four up. Then Perrone played a fine bowl for the shot, and he won the head by one. Per- . rone 10. Dee 11. The thirteenth head was burnt by ■ Dee. He again burnt the head when , one down. Dee won the head with one Dee 12. Perrone 16. Good bowling saw Perrone win the j fourteenth by two. making the score: j Perrone 18. Dee 12. The fifteenth saw Perrone 2 upland j it made him 20 against 12. Dee made up one on the sixteenth. J but on the 17th Perrone’s team all played well, and he won the head by 4. setting Dee an almost impossible task with the scores: Perrone 24. Dee 13. Perrone went on his winning way with 2 more on the 18th. Perrone 26. Dee 13. with three heads to play. Dee picked up 2 on the nineteenth, and was confronted with the score Perrone 26. Dee 15. Dee won the 20th with one. and the game was abandoned, with Perrone 26, Dee 16. WINNERS CONGRATULATED At the conclusion of the final. Mr A H. Crawley. President of the Nelson Centre and Nelson Club, congratulated
the winners and presented the trophies won the tournament Mr Crawley said a most successful Jubilee tournament had come to a close, and he hoped that all the bowlers and visitors had enjoyed themselves. He thanked the car owners who had kindly co-operated in providing transport for the trip to Kaiteriteri. The bowling in the final had been of n high standard, said the President, and he congratulated the winners who had won on their merits. He also congratulated the runners-up on a good performance after their big early deficit. It gave him pleasure to congratulate the Maitai rink on winning the Nelson Club’s Jubilee tournament which entitled the club to the Jubilee Cup. vhich he handed to Mr H. R. Dodson, President of the Maitai Club. Cheers were called for the winners and runners-up. and for the ladies who had provided the morning and afternoon teas during the tournament.
